Anny Xu is a junior in Computer Science & Geography & GIS. She heard about the ATLAS internship program through her academic advisor, as well as department emails and newsletters. She wanted to join ATLAS to gain real-world experience in web development and apply her technical skills outside of an academic setting. She found this role was a good fit for her academic goals as well as her interests in front-end development and design. Anny works as a Web Developer intern on the ATLAS Web Development Team and is tasked with building a personal website using WordPress. She has worked on the design and development of a functional website hosted on the UIUC web platform, which includes pages and a navigation component. She is also responsible for utilizing Drupal to build department-level websites and studying content structure, components, and accessibility standards. In her role, she identified and resolved accessibility issues, including empty form labels and low color contrast, and utilized design components to meet UIUC’s web standards. She developed her technical skills through her experiences using WordPress and Drupal, where she set up websites, customized page layouts, and utilized call-to-actions and image cards. She gained experience in following web accessibility standards, as well as in using UIUC’s web design system and cPanel for site management. Anny also gained proficiency in her communication and collaboration skills through her presentations in weekly meetings. Through her ATLAS internship, Anny has learned the importance of accessibility and user experience in web development. Developing a website is not only about making a site functional; it’s about making it accessible for everyone. She plans to pursue a career in data visualization, web development, and geospatial applications. Anny has a kitten that can communicate with people by pressing buttons that make talking sounds.
