Deja Wooten is a junior Brain and Cognitive Science major. She first heard about the ATLAS Internship Program through emails and newsletters and decided to join because the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while also working in her filed of interest, neuroscience, was very appealing to her. She was also looking to improve her communication and organizational skills. Deja worked with the Neuroscience Graduate Program as her client, a program through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences that connects students with research activities and other opportunities in the field. She worked as a Communication Specialist there, which required her to keep in touch with faculty on a rotating schedule to ensure that lab information was correct on the Neuroscience “Faculty Research” webpage. She also submitted information about upcoming events to the “NeuroWeek” Neuroscience newsletter. Through this internship, Deja gained experience in managing and updating digital content, specifically relating to lab information and events. She also developed skills in using web content management systems that were used to manage the Neuroscience website. She was able to improve her communication skills in a professional environment, along with learning how to efficiently manage her time while handling multiple tasks and deadlines. Deja has come to realize the importance of effective communication and organization in professional settings, ensuring that everyone is on the same page and that information is clearly communicated. Additionally learning that attention to detail and consistency which are crucial when working on a project with many moving parts. In the future, Deja plans to get her PhD to research Pediatric Neuropsychology. And when she’s not busy, she spends her time skating and watching true crime documentaries.
