This is Ellen Min, a junior studying Brain and Cognitive Sciences at Illinois, and this was her first semester at ATLAS. She first heard of the internship program through department emails and newsletters and decided to join because she wanted to gain hands-on experience in a field related to Human-Computer Interaction—one that would allow her to work with immersive technologies while also learning valuable professional skills necessary in a working environment. Ellen interns for ATLAS as an Emerging Technology Events Coordinator. In this role, she’s in charge of collaborating with the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (CITL) to share VR resources with LAS students. She also reaches out to faculty to find ways to integrate VR into coursework and study aids for students. In addition, she’s preparing to hold a “VR Roadshow” to give LAS students the opportunity to interact with VR experiences that could benefit their learning. Throughout her internship, Ellen became proficient in using VR software and equipment, as well as Microsoft Teams. She also learned how to communicate professionally with her client, faculty members, and other LAS students. Through the work she did, she gained the organizational and problem-solving skills necessary to manage different VR programs and equipment. The big takeaway Ellen is taking from this experience is how immersive learning experiences can be created through the application of emerging technologies such as VR. Looking ahead, Ellen hopes to work in the Human-Computer Interaction field to learn more about how technology and interfaces can assist learning. When she’s not working, though, she enjoys watching Marvel movies, listening to her favorite music, hiking, and playing a variety of instruments!
