Ferdinand Ferdinand (that’s not a typo!) is a sophomore Astrophysics major completing his first semester at ATLAS. As an aspiring astronomer, Ferdinand is always focused on research. So he figured that joining the ATLAS Internship Program would allow him to look at what he often overlooked, the industry side of a working environment. What appealed to him most was the chance to gain this experience without compromising his time for independent research. Ferdinand works at ATLAS as a Business Process Improvement intern. He focuses on building custom digital forms using FormBuilder to streamline data collection based on client requirements. He also documents workflows and best practices to enable future process improvements. Because of his work, Ferdinand deepened his understanding of how business processes function—and how they can be optimized. He also became proficient in FormBuilder to create the online forms, demonstrating a strong ability to learn and apply new tools in a professional setting. The importance of communication in the industry setting, along with time management, are also skills that he was able to appreciate. The lesson that Ferdinand will take from this internship is that he has a better idea of what industry work looks like compared to academic work, and he hopes that knowing this distinction will lead him to choose the career path that is best for him after graduation. He is determined to pursue a PhD and become a researcher who is able to explore and discover the unknown.
