Hanran Wang is a junior majoring in Econometrics & Quantitative Economics. He heard about the ATLAS internship program through department emails and newsletters and decided to join to apply the skills he had learned in an academic setting to real-world projects. Hanran wanted to gain experience in the fields of data analysis and technology. He found ATLAS was a great fit due to the collaboration and flexibility involved with the program, and he saw this as an opportunity to develop professional skills, build his portfolio, and contribute meaningful work to the UIUC community. Hanran works as an LMS Specialist intern for the ATLAS internship program. He is responsible for importing and managing R-based datasets and making them accessible and visually organized for beginners. He is also tasked with creating customized data visualizations for people to interpret housing trends using R. Hanran easily collaborates with the internship team members to troubleshoot data formatting issues. He has gained technical proficiency with programming in R. Additionally, Hanran has enhanced his communication skills through his internship. Hanran has learned how to translate technical or coding-related work into concepts simple to understand for a non-technical audience. He must focus on communication and clarity when working with datasets or building visualizations, so his work can be effectively used and understood by his team members, who have varying backgrounds. In the future, Hanran plans to pursue a career in data analytics or economic research in the finance or consulting industry. He is interested in utilizing data insights to support decision-making and solve business problems. Hanran is also setting a goal to build his technical skills in tools such as R, Python, and Excel, and potentially pursue graduate studies in applied economics or statistics. He enjoys using the VR tools in the Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics Building.
