Hongyang Yu

Hongyang Yu, a junior majoring in Mathematics and Economics, is now completing his second semester as an intern with the ATLAS Data Team. After hearing about the internship through department emails, Hongyang joined the program with a clear goal in mind: to sharpen both his communication and technical skills in preparation for graduate school or a future career in data science. As a Data Analyst Intern, Hongyang has worked on a wide range of analytical projects. One major focus involved analyzing computer usage data from classrooms in the LCLB building to identify areas for cost savings and increased efficiency. He also developed dynamic dashboards using Tableau to visualize undergraduate enrollment trends at UIUC, particularly examining shifts across different class levels since Fall 2022. His Tableau stories offered step-by-step analyses, helping viewers engage with patterns and ask deeper questions. On the technical side, Hongyang gained proficiency in Tableau, Microsoft Teams, and Python which are all tools he’s confident will be essential in his professional journey. Just as importantly, he built skills such as time management, adaptability, and the confidence to lead weekly Zoom presentations with his team. His biggest lesson he learned is that planning ahead and being proactive are key, and collaborating with others can often lead to the best results. Looking ahead, Hongyang aspires to become a data scientist or data analyst in the tech industry. And while he’s serious about data, he’s also someone who appreciates a good time. One of his favorite internship memories is a well-earned pizza party with the SMMC data team.
