Nitya Lohiya is a sophomore majoring in Statistics & Computer Science. She heard about the ATLAS Internship Program through department newsletters and joined because she wanted hands-on experience building technology for real users rather than working only on coursework or personal projects. She is an Educational Technology Developer Intern working with Professor Adam Osman to develop ITQAN Academy, a free digital learning platform inspired by Khan Academy for learners in Egypt and the broader Middle East.
Nitya's primary responsibilities include designing the platform's recommendation engine, building a knowledge graph of the Grade 6 mathematics curriculum using large language models, and developing a validation pipeline to ensure the accuracy of the generated knowledge graph. Through this work, she has researched adaptive learning systems, explored knowledge tracing methods, and integrated machine learning techniques into an educational technology platform with real-world impact.
Throughout her internship, Nitya has strengthened both her technical and professional skills. She has gained experience with knowledge graphs, graph databases, large language models, and machine learning while also improving her communication, project planning, time management, and collaboration skills by translating complex research into practical solutions for her team.
Looking ahead, Nitya hopes to build a career at the intersection of machine learning and product development, creating AI-powered technologies that solve meaningful real-world problems. Outside of work, she has trained in Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form, for over ten years. She also enjoys hiking, exploring new places, listening to music, and trying new foods.
