Saaim Jamal

Saaim Jamal is a senior majoring in Economics. Saaim heard about the ATLAS Internship Program at a career fair and decided to join because he wanted to use his technical skills to make a real-world impact. During his first semester as an intern, he serves as an AI/ML Developer for the UIUC Bachelor's of Liberal Studies Program. His responsibilities involve testing and evaluating AI models for the University of Illinois BLS Virtual Advisor. He does this by comparing the response accuracy, document grounding, latency, and instruction-following for 4 main LLMs. Saaim also improves chatbot response quality through system prompt engineering, measures API response time, and investigates time-out errors to improve the chatbot's accuracy.

During his internship with ATLAS, Saaim gained experience in analyzing retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems, evaluating LLMs, prompt engineering, and Python. He also gained soft skills such as time management, presentation skills, attention to detail, and critical thinking.

In the future, Saaim plans to work at the intersection of AI and analytics where he can use data to improve AI-powered products. A fun fact about Saaim is that he loves Dave's Hot Chicken.
