Sai Pranav Kakumanu is a junior majoring in Statistics & Computer Science. He joined the ATLAS Internship Program to apply his Statistics and Computer Science skills to real university projects while gaining professional experience. ATLAS offers hands-on opportunities in areas like process improvement, web development, and machine learning, all of which align with his goal of becoming a data-driven software engineer. Sai has been an intern for three semesters and currently works with ATLAS as a Machine Learning & AI Developer Intern. In this role, he helps build a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) Chatbot that answers ATLAS staff questions using university policy and procedure documents, handling web scraping, data chunking, and model integration to improve accuracy. He also develops LangGraph agents that automate tasks such as document summarization and data lookup, using memory checkpointing with SQLite and reasoning capabilities to make workflows more efficient for staff users. Additionally, Sai evaluates the chatbot’s performance with structured queries to measure accuracy and grounding, using the results to fine-tune the retrieval pipeline and enhance responses. Through his ATLAS internships, he has developed a strong mix of technical skills across process improvement, web development, and machine learning. He learned to digitize workflows using FormBuilder, manage websites with WordPress and Drupal, and gained hands-on experience with Python, LangGraph, RAG pipelines, and SQL databases. Beyond technical growth, Sai strengthened his communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, learning to clearly explain technical ideas, manage multiple projects, and adapt to feedback. He has also improved his organization, time management, and adaptability in collaborative team settings. The biggest lesson Sai has learned is that technical work is most impactful when paired with clear communication and collaboration. His projects taught him that understanding client needs and simplifying complex ideas can make technical solutions far more meaningful. In the future, he plans to become a Software Engineer focused on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, creating data-driven systems that solve real-world problems. When he’s not working, Sai enjoys movies and video games, where analyzing stories, characters, and strategy inspires his creativity and problemsolving mindset.
