Say hello to Sanhorn Chen. He’s currently a junior majoring in Computer Science and Economics, spending his second semester at ATLAS as an AI/Machine Learning Team intern. He first heard about the program from his friends and classmates, and then joined to gain practical experience applying classroom knowledge to actual projects tasked by clients. Skills he wants to practice include communicating with teams as well as clients in order to bring real-world impact. In his internship, Sanhorn sets up an interactive fullstack website with both frontend and backend components, integrating user-friendly UI/UX features. He fine-tunes a Large Language Model (LLM) to develop a student advisor chatbot that aids Illinois students with course planning and career guidance. Additionally, he participates in Kaggle Machine Learning competitions to gain hands-on experience with models such as Support Vector Machines (SVM). Throughout his experience, Sanhorn develops valuable technical skills, including data collection cleaning and structuring, as well as experience in frontend and backend development. He works with technologies such as React, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, RestAPI, Python, and PyTorch. Beyond technical expertise, he hones his communication, presentation, and PowerPoint design skills through regular interactions with clients and teammates. One of the key lessons he’s learning is the importance of tracking progress and planning ahead. Managing multiple tasks effectively requires clear documentation to stay organized and ensure efficiency. Looking ahead, Sanhorn plans to go to graduate school and is preparing to apply to the Illinois CS Ph.D. program. Outside of academics, he enjoys playing baseball and is a dedicated New York Yankees fan.
