Suvan Chatakondu is a sophomore majoring in Statistics and Computer Science, now in his second semester with the ATLAS Internship Program. He first heard about the opportunity through friends and classmates and was drawn in by the chance to gain hands-on experience while still in school. The opportunity to join the Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI) team especially appealed to him, offering a chance to apply his passion for machine learning and AI in real-world projects. As a developer in the ML/AI team, Suvan has worked on several projects. His tasks include using RoBERTa to analyze text similarity between course descriptions, building an interface to recommend similar courses, and implementing a large language model to identify and compare topics between different classes. Through his work, Suvan has gained technical skills in Python programming, working with the RoBERTa model, and data manipulation using the Pandas library. He’s also developed soft skills such as professionalism, organization, and networking— particularly through regular meetings and project check-ins that simulate a professional work environment. One major lesson Suvan has learned is that procrastination can quickly become a slippery slope, making it much harder to catch up. And looking ahead, he plans to pursue a career in the Data Science and Machine Learning industry. On his off time though, his favorite pastime is finding new movies to watch.
