Dhanish Natarajan, a sophomore by standing but a junior by credit, is majoring in Statistics and Computer Science at the University of Illinois. He joined the ATLAS Internship Program after hearing about it from friends and classmates. Passionate about software engineering and machine learning, Dhanish sought an opportunity to apply his skills in a collaborative environment that encourages teamwork and initiative. As a Learning Management Systems Specialist on the Machine Learning Team, Dhanish was tasked with developing a machine learning model to classify items as trash or recycling. He collaborated with two other interns, researching machine learning and computer vision topics by reading and summarizing research papers. Dhanish also documented the project's progress and posted all notes and documentation on the Canvas Learning Management System for future interns to reference. During his internship, Dhanish acquired technical skills in Numpy, OpenCV, image preprocessing, and computer vision, alongside improving his understanding of machine learning concepts. He also developed essential soft skills such as initiative, proactiveness, and communication. The experience of working closely with a team of equally passionate individuals was particularly rewarding for him, as he witnessed their individual contributions seamlessly coming together by the project's end. Looking ahead, Dhanish plans to gain professional experience in software engineering through internships and working at startups. As someone with an entrepreneurial mindset, he also aspires to eventually launch his own startup, aiming to make a significant impact in areas he is passionate about, such as education and sustainability. Beyond his academic and career pursuits, Dhanish enjoys biking, listening to music, working out, and spending time with his friends and family. He always tries to find a balance between his work, exercise, and socializing.
