Jax Richmond, a senior majoring in Chemistry, has embraced the world of lab science with an enthusiasm that’s infectious. Joining the ATLAS Internship Program through a recommendation in a department email, Jax has maximized the resources provided by the university to carve a niche in the scientific community. His role as a Lab Science Intern with Earnest Agriculture is nothing short of fascinating.
In his position, Jax took soil and plant samples to isolate and study microbes that thrive around them. His work involved conducting microbial assays to evaluate their resistance to disease and their potential to promote plant growth. One of his notable tasks included assembling beneficial microbes into a seed coating, an innovative product that will ultimately benefit farmers.
Jax’s internship has significantly honed his technical skills. He’s become proficient with organizational tools like Excel and advanced testing technologies such as electrophoresis. Beyond the technical expertise, Jax has also gained valuable experience working collaboratively within a lab team, preparing him for a seamless transition into the professional world.
Looking ahead, Jax aspires to a career in the organic chemistry industry, where he can continue to blend his passion for science with practical applications. Outside the lab, Jax enjoys playing the trombone with the Illini marching band, adding a harmonious note to his diverse skill set.
